Thanks, Darren. For this past year it seems like I've learned a lot about what I don't want to do, and what doesn't inspire me and I think that's the connecting thread. It's much easier to learn what we like, rather than dislike, but I think, in some ways, these experiences have been much more valuable. They've helped reshape my identity in ways that I couldn't have imagined. And while it's been painful, it's been a very good thing :)

I'd love to hear more about what you & your colleagues are doing around self-regulation.

[...] Shelley Wright blogs about the difficulty in the progressive ideas in teaching. Those being, student based, technology fluency, etc., the words we hear everyday. It’s those words being repeated over and over that wears us down. We think about how much easier teaching to the textbook and using the prepared chapter and unit exams would be. That’s not why we do, or are preparing to do, what we do. We’ve seen or felt that fire that’s ignited in a child. Let’s keep teaching for today and tomorrow. If that means using the technology that is popular to help our kids in their future and help them grasp the concepts faster today, so be it. [...]

Great thoughts and beautifully crafted, thank you Shelley.
Three years ago I and some friends started Princeton Learning Cooperative in order to address some of these issues and we continue to thrive. Copy us, so many kids out there need an alternative to traditional school.

Once I read one of your posts (and at this point I don't even remember which one I read first,) I started reading back through the archives, because everything you write, I have thought at one time or another. I'm currently an educator in a middle school humanities classroom of 7th and 8th graders, and my co-educator and I have started to bring our vision of a dynamic, student-centered, inquiry based classroom to life. Often in these early trials, it looks like a disaster! But each time we try something new, we learn a little more and see students begin to take charge of their education. We see the first steps towards more critical thinking, more innovation in problem-solving, and there is no way we can turn back. Personally, I have never felt so motivated to keep struggling, because my intuition tells me that this is what education should be, for the students and myself. I can't wait to see where we end up next, and it is exhilarating to not know where that might be!

Thanks for the wonderful blog...I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts!
